The Value of Mangroves to Commercial Fishing in Moreton Bay

Michael Ross, Norm Duke

commenced: February 2007
to be completed: November 2007

Current perceptions of the relationship between wetlands and fisheries
productivity are limited, and it is essential to continue developing
hypotheses by quantifying the consequences of the loss and degradation
of these vital habitats. This study wishes to conduct a correlative
evaluation comparing the past changes in tidal wetland extent and
health with historical fisheries productivity on ecologically relevant
spatial and temporal scales which have been neglected in the past.
Through a combination of detailed commercial logbook data and fine-
scale habitat mapping, this study will assist future management
decisions regarding the sustainable use of coastal resources and
conservation of biodiversity.
