Mangroves

Mangroves are mostly flowering plants > 0.5 m tall which usually grow in the intertidal zone above mean sea level around estuaries and in sheltered embayments of coastal margins and islands. Australia has 37 species, which is around 52% of those found in the world.
In Moreton Bay, mangroves form extensive and biologically diverse ecosystems. Eight species are found in the bay and surrounding areas (see back cover), but one, Avicennia marina var. australasica dominates. This unusual cold tolerant variety is found commonly in Southeastern Australia. In wet tropical climates, where mangroves grow best, Rhizophora species often dominate. Most species extend into colder regions only where winter temperatures are moderated by warm seawater temperatures. Moreton Bay is such a place - a feature reflected in its diversity of marine habitats combining components of both tropical and temperate biota.
