Moreton Bay Biota

High Biotic Diversity

Moreton Bay is a sub-tropical region where the prevailing conditions allow tropical and temperate species to coexist, forming a dynamic ecosystem. Moreton Bay supports a broad and rich diversity of faunal and floral assemblages inhabiting small-scale mud, sand, rocky and in situ structural substrates within a variety of broad scale estuarine, coastal and open water habitats. Moreton Bay supports a diverse array of primary and secondary taxonomic groups.

The primary producers within Moreton Bay include seagrasses, mangroves, phytoplankton, cyanobacteria, bentic microalgae and corals.
In turn the primary producers support a number of significant faunal groups, especially dugongs, turtles and whales.
