Research Higher Degrees at CMS
The Centre for Marine Studies offers postgraduate research programs (Masters and PhD) in a number of research areas.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
A PhD in Marine Studies is a three to three-and-a-half year full-time degree pursuing research on a topic in marine studies. Entry into the PhD program usually requires a BSc with Class I or Class IIA Honours or equivalent. Examination is by thesis. Entry may also be made through a relevant Postgraduate Diploma in Marine Studies or Master of Marine Studies. For further information see courses and programs 

Masters Degree by Research (MPhil)
A Masters Degree by Research (MPhil) is a two-year degree pursuing research on a topic in marine studies. Entry into the Masters by Research program usually requires a Bachelor degree with Honours or a relevant Postgraduate Diploma in marine studies. For further information see courses and programs

Postgraduate Studies in Maritime Law
The Marine & Shipping Law Unit has been established within the TC Beirne School of Law, University of Queensland, led by Dr Michael White QC, Executive Director and Dr Sarah Derrington, Director. The Centre has links with the Centre for Marine Studies and other Australian and international Centres.

Funding/Scholarshipsspectral experiments
The Centre for Marine Studies does not offer scholarships or admit students without necessary funding, see the Graduate School website for information regarding domestic scholarships (such as the APA) and international student scholarships (IPRS).

Application process - Research Higher Degrees
Details of the application process for domestic and international students can be found on the Graduate School website.

Briefly:

  1. Go to the staff pages on this site and find an academic whose area of research interests you.
  2. Contact the CMS Postgraduate Administrative Officer (cmsgradresearch@cms.uq.edu.au), if you have additional questions.
  3. Complete an Expression of Interest Form (.doc file 132kb) and submit this to the CMS Postgraduate Administrative Officer (cmsgradresearch@cms.uq.edu.au).
  4. If your Expression of Interest Form is successful, you will be invited by CMS to continue the application process:

I.    Contact your potential supervisor(s) directly outlining your background and interests and fully develop your research proposal with them.
II.   Download and complete your application for admission and scholarship and send the completed package (including other necessary documentation such as academic transcripts, CV, and evidence of English proficiency) to the CMS Postgraduate Administrative Officer (cmsgradresearch@cms.uq.edu.au)
III.  Referee's reports must be completed by two of your chosen referees and sent directly by the referee to the CMS graduate research co-ordinator to the address below.
