There are three main pathways for students interested in a career in marine science:
- Bachelor of Marine Studies (BMarSt)
This degree provides an integrated program of study across a range of disciplines relevant to understanding, researching and managing the marine environment. Fields of specialisation include Aquaculture & Marine Biotechnology, Coastal Management, Marine Biology & Ecology and Marine Geology & Coastal Processes. Fieldwork at Heron Island and Moreton Bay Research Stations and with industry links are features of this program. - BSc - Tropical Marine Science (Coral Futures) (Website - Tropical Marine Network. Email : USYD , UQ , JCU )
The new National Degree in Tropical Marine Science is a collaboration between the Australian Museum, James Cook University, The University of Queensland and The University of Sydney. It is delivered at host campuses and at Marine Research Stations.
The program is sponsored by the Commonwealth Bank of Australia and The Great Barrier reef Foundation.

- Bachelor of Science (BSc)
Students wishing to enrol in a broad science degree, with a marine biology focus are required to complete first level in their chosen major field, e.g. anatomy, biology, botany, chemistry, earth science, geographical sciences, microbiology, parasitology, physics, veterinary or zoology, and in 2nd and 3rd levels, select marine biology subjects to graduate with a marine major. This gives a broad and strong knowledge of the marine environment, which enables either employment in marine fields or provides a sound basis for postgraduate study in their major discipline. Visit the Faculty of Science website for more information on marine science focussed BSc programs, or contact an advisor.

Elective Courses
Marine-related courses can also be taken as electives in any degree programme. For example, if a student wants to study law, and pursue a career in maritime law, electives can be taken that provide the specific knowledge of the sea and its management for this career. Similar options are available to those students who wish to study areas such as commerce, economics, education, engineering or management.
Honours
Students without studies in marine sciences in their undergraduate degree can also complete an honours year with a marine science focus.
Diploma
The Diploma of Applied Science (Majoring in Marine Resources or Wilderness Reserves and Wildlife) is available externally from Gatton College campus.
